Your Guide to Winter Chills & Thrills in Galway City
Dear Backpacker Buds,
Welcome to our cozy corner of the world, where the crisp Atlantic air only adds to the enchantment of Galway! While the weather might be brisk, fear not – there’s a world of wonders waiting for you, right here in our beloved city. So, grab your scarf, slip on those gloves, and let’s dive into the heart warming winter adventures that Galway has to offer.
1. Galway Christmas Market Extravaganza:
‘Tis the season to be jolly, and what better way to embrace the winter spirit than by immersing yourself in the magical wonderland of the Galway Christmas Market? Indulge in delicious festive treats, sip on a cup of warm mulled wine, take a spin on the big wheel for a bird’s eye view of the city, and soak in the festive vibes as you browse the charming (and tasty) stalls.
2. Celtic Tales & Soul-Warming Trad:
Now this is an absolute winner if you’re in town on a Thursday evening! Hunker down in the West End’s cozy Crane Bar for some storytelling and traditional music. Galway’s resident Scottish Seanchaí Rab Fulton will titillate and excite you with myths & tales from our Celtic roots. Buy your Celtic Tales tix in advance online or chance your luck at the door. Afterwards, get your toes tapping and experience the warmth of Irish hospitality through the soul-stirring rhythms of traditional Irish music. This Thursday session is not to be missed!
3. Winter Walks along the Salthill Prom:
Bundle up in your coziest layers and take a stroll along Salthill Promenade. The crashing waves, salty sea breeze, and the stunning views of Galway Bay will make you forget all about the chilly weather. Plus, it’s the perfect spot for some Insta-worthy snaps! We love the inviting stone walls of Blackrock Cottage for a late breakfast or brunch.
4. ‘Bar Stool Weather’:
Galway’s pubs are legendary, and they become even more inviting during the winter months. Here at Woodquay Hostel we call a wet and windy day: ‘bar stool weather’, so pull up a pew and make yourself at home! A few steps down the road the cozy fireside of Barr An Chaladh is calling. Nestled in the heart of the Latin Quarter is Tigh Neachtain, find a cozy snug with your name on it or warm yourself by the fire! So, grab a pint, and relish the warmth of good company, live music, hearty laughter, and the crackling of the fireplace – these are the ingredients for a perfect winter evening.
5. Delve into History at Galway City Museum:
Escape the cold by delving into the fascinating history of Galway at the Galway City Museum. Explore the exhibits, learn about the city’s rich cultural heritage, and maybe even discover a hidden gem or two. Just watch out for Sundays and Mondays when they’re closed.
6. Hot Bevvies to Warm the Soul:
Why not warm yourself from the inside out with a hot drink? We’re big fans of the Boozy Hot Chocolates around the corner from us at Java. Or, if you like your hot chocolate with a touch of decadent spice then Murphy’s is the place for you – famous for their Irish ice cream, they also do a ripper Aztec Hot Chocolate in the winter season. Irish Coffee at McSwiggan’s? Hot Whiskey at Tigh Coili? The list is endless!
7. Hostel Games Evenings:
Back at the hostel, we’ve got your back for those evenings when you just want to relax and avoid the outside world. Raid the games cupboard in our Lounge and have an evening of friendly competition – a perfect way to bond with fellow travellers and create memories. There’s also Dungeons and Donuts down the road for… you guessed it, donuts, and more games!
So, there you have it – Galway’s winter wonders await you, and our backpackers hostel is the perfect home base for your chilly escapades. Embrace the season, make new friends, and let the magic of Galway warm your heart.
Safe travels & warm wishes,
